This is a memorial statue erected in Union cemetery in the town of Fort Edward, NY which is also the town in which I live. The statue honors all the soldiers that served in the Civil war from the area. Union cemetery has a number of beautiful stones erected to honor those that have passed on and to any history buff, it's well worth the visit due to the fact that just within the main gates are the headstones of Jane McCrea whose massacre at Fort Edward was said to have been one of the events that spurred the beginning of the American Revolution, and Maj. Duncan Campbell who was wounded at Fort Ticonderoga during the French and Indian war and later died of his wounds.

It's a good size. Old stones there too. Nondenominational as well. I'll be taking more in the summer.

I love it when you tell the history... I get so intrigue in history. You seem to like going into old cemetaries, sound like my father...hehe, of course I take after him too as the history buff.

Well thank you! I try very hard to give the background of a shot or at least a link to information. I am always a curious person and I love to read about the places i see here on DA so I try to give details in return. My father was also a cemetery buff, he did a lot of geneaology work on his family.

:o My father too was working on our family tree also. Wow, you and I have that in common, cool.

My family on my father's side...my grandmother's grandfather(her mother's father) came from Switzerland, the name Egly, was 18 years old(about 1880s). Her father's family, Borne, came from Germany.

My grandfather, the Butcher, which was my maiden name, came from England which goes far back in 1612 in Jamestown, Virginia as we think so.

My mother's side, the Clarks... all mostly from Germany. I found out from my mother several years ago that she said we are related to the famous George Rogers Clark, one of the explorers and his brother, Will Clark, the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, so I am sure we maybe related to them but it is what my mother told me, I was so shock. I got to visit in Southern Indiana where there is a monument memorial of the statue of George Rogers Clark, but I did not get to see the statue since the museum was closed that day. :(

I think it is so facinating to see where our family comes from. We had a book published about the Egly family and where they were from around the Bern, Switzerland area. We had one relative travelling to there to meet others related to us.
